Impact of the economic crisis on the EU’s industrial energy consumption
The economic crisis started in 2008 has had an impact on GDP as well as on energy consumption. Both fell significantly in 2009, before rebounding in 2010, but from 2007 to 2014, energy consumption in EU decreased by 11%, while GDP recovered its 2007 level. To what extent is this decoupling of energy consumption from GDP due to an increase in ‘energy efficiency’ (a decrease in unit consumptions of economic sectors) or to a ‘structural effect’ (a change in the relative weights of economic sectors)? This paper addresses this question at EU-level, based on ODYSSEE data and focusing on industry.
