Senior Research Associate at IKEM. He has been working in the field of low-carbon and climate-resilient urban development since 2009. He is currently involved in the Kopernikus-Project ENavi as a part of IKEM´s energy efficiency team focusing on energy efficiency in the building sector. Since August 2017, he is also a Senior researcher at the Greifswald University currently involved in a Interreg project called “Dynamic Light”, where he investigates regulatory and legal frameworks in 7 European countries for energy efficient public lighting implementation. Furthermore, José Mercado is involved with IKEM´s electric mobility and climate finance research areas, where he actively contributes to the development and acquisition of projects in Europe and Latin America.
He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Sciences at the Universidad Mayor de San Simon, Bolivia. He has a Master´s degree in Human Settlements and Environment from the Universidad Católica de Chile and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He wrote his doctoral dissertation about the role of energy efficiency in the private housing sector in Santiago de Chile.
His academic career is complemented by extensive professional experience in international organisations, such as the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Chile, where he worked as a consultant for the development of a Green Climate Fund proposal in the field of residential energy efficiency and sustainable housing. In May 2017 José Mercado joined the MIT Climate CoLab as an Evaluation Support Fellow in the Buildings contest.
